The Royal Devon and Exeter Health Care NHS Trust, was established on 1st April 1993, with services based at the Wonford and Heavitree (Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Neonatal care) sites. The RD&E provides acute hospital services to the people of Exeter, East Devon and Mid Devon, a core population of around 350,000 people. We also offer specialist services such as cancer care, plastic & reconstructive surgery, orthopaedic surgery, paediatric care and renal services to people living further afield in Devon, Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly, Somerset and Dorset. We have more than 30 wards, 20 operating theatres, around 850 inpatient beds and more than 60 daycase beds.

It is a Foundation Trust, which has retained its top-ranked three star status in the NHS performance ratings for 2004/05, making it one of only a few trusts in the country to have achieved three stars for five successive years.

Exeter is a lively University City with excellent amenities. Close proximity to both the coast and Dartmoor provide abundant recreational possibilities for sailors, windsurfers, kitesurfers, mountain bikers and walkers.

The Radiology Department

The Radiology Department is staffed by 15 Radiologists and 47 radiographers who perform approximately 168,000 radiological investigations per year. Individual radiologists have sub-speciality interests covering all areas including Nuclear Medicine with particular strength in musculo-skeletal and interventional radiology with a recently appointed Professor of Interventional Radiology.

 

The department has three ultrasound machines, two CT scanners, a 4 slice and a 16 slice, and two 1.5 Tesla MRI scanners. It also has two general fluoroscopy rooms and a C-arm fluoroscopy room for interventional procedures and PACS (filmless Picture Archiving and Communication System).

 

Trainees at the Royal Devon & Exeter will benefit from the high ratio of Consultants to trainees, with an emphasis on one to one supervision and small group tutorials and excellent opportunities to pursue audit and research interests.
