Academy Staff


Dr Carl Roobottom
Academy Head
Carl has been responsible for the development of the Academy and is now its clinical lead. He believes a good training scheme is one that listens to the needs of its trainees and is able to operate on a friendly and informal basis.


Deborah Southon
Academy Business Manager

Deborah joined the Academy in April 2007, following a role in public health project management. Her role is to provide strategic and operational leadership; supporting the trainees and operational staff. Working alongside the Academy Head, Head of Training, The Trust and all our Stakeholders to ensure the Programme runs smoothly and effectively into the future.


Dr Bruce Fox
Head of School

Bruce is is in charge of the Training Scheme across the Peninsula and is Clinical Tutor in Plymouth. He has been heavily involved in the Academy project both locally and nationally since its inception. He has an interest in Medical Education and has coordinated the Radiology curriculum development for the Peninsula Medical School, where he is a Clinical Fellow. He is also the National Lead Editor for Gastrointestinal Radiology within the RITI Electronic Learning Database project.


Sarah Dunn
Academy Operational Manager

Sarah graduated from Plymouth University in 2002 and, after completing work experience at Derriford Hospital, began her career in the NHS. She later joined the Academy in September 2005. Sarah's main role is the day to day operational management of the Academy whilst also co-ordinating the booking of facilities, Registrar timetables and administration. ON MATERNITY LEAVE FROM JULY 2010.


Deborah Caton
Academy Receptionist

Deborah joined the Academy in November 2006 as our Receptionist. Her role is to assist Trainees with queries, greet all visitors and look after Academy timetables. Debbie works in the mornings from 8.00 am until 1.00 pm Monday to Friday.


Louise Beer
Academy Receptionist

Louise has worked for the NHS for the last five years and joined us in November 2008 after moving from Musgrove Hospital in Taunton. Her role is to assist with queries and greet all visitors.  Louise works from 1.00 to 6.00 pm Monday to Friday. 


Andrew Baker
Academy Housekeeper

Andrew served in the Royal Marines for 30 years and joined the NHS in 1997. After working at Derriford hospital’s Sterilisation & Disinfection Unit for 9 years Andrew joined the Academy in February 2006. Andrew is responsible for the day to day upkeep of the Academy and for assisting with visitors and event organisers.
